Question: I'm looking for help with ways to carry 2 kayaks on my 2006 Chevy Trailblazer factory rack cross bars. Using your fit guides it looks like this won't work though? What do you suggest for kayak roof rack alternatives? Thanks.
Answer: Your current 2006 Chevy Trailblazer factory rack cross bars are not rated to handle the weight of kayaks (or any other gear and equipment such as bikes, canoe, stand-up paddleboards, surfboards, cargo luggage box etc., and you will need to first install a base rack system with cross bars on your Chevy Trailblazer factory tracks, replacing your current factory rack set up. As of this writing (9/12/2011), from Yakima Racks you would choose the Yakima Control Towers roof rack system (includes set of four Control Towers, four LP1 Landing Pads and pair of cross bars - the 58” length crossbars are the recommended length, providing the ideal space for attaching two kayak racks for carrying 2 kayaks). The LP1 Landing Pads connect to the factory tracks and the Control Towers, with cross bars connected, attach to the LP1 Landing Pads. From Thule Racks you would choose the Thule 460 Podium roof rack system (includes set of four 460 Podium Feet, four 3101 Podium Fit Kit brackets and pair of cross bars - the 58” length crossbars are also recommended, providing the ideal space for attaching two kayak racks for carrying 2 kayaks). The 3101 Podium Fit Kit brackets connect to the Thule roof tracks and the 460 Podium Feet, with cross bars connected, attach to the 3101 Podium Fit Kits.
With either of these base racks installed as a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer roof rack system, you can then connect any kayak carriers to the cross bars. Virtually all kayak racks are universal mounting, allowing you to choose the model that you like best, independent of whether it is the same manufacturer as the base rack system. In general you have three types of kayak rack options: 1) kayak saddles - carry the kayak laying flat / 2) kayak j-cradles - transport the kayak cradled on its side (great for when you need to carry multiple kayaks because the j-cradles use up less crossbar space than the kayak saddles style) / 3) kayak lift-assisting models - mostly kayak saddles with a rear roller that helps you to more easily load and unload the kayak, however some side-loading options are also available that work with j-cradles etc. Not Sure What Rack System Will Best Meet Your Needs?
