Question: I'm interested in a 2006 Mercedes C230 roof rack surfboards carrier system for carrying 1 - 3 surfboards. The 06 Mercedez Benz C230 is a 4Dr sedan model with nothing on the car top currently (no factory rack or side rails etc.) What to you recommend?
Answer: As of this writing (5/28/2011), we highly recommend the following options for surfboard roof rack systems on your 06 Mercedes C230 4Dr sedan model...
MULTI-PURPOSE BASE RACK SYSTEMS
You'll need to first install a multi-purpose base rack system on the 2006 Mercedes Benz C230 4-door car top. With the general purpose roof rack in place, you can then attach any gear carriers, including surfboard racks, to the crossbars for transporting your equipment. For the 2006 C230 Mercedes we highly recommend a couple options from Thule Racks. First is the Thule 480 Traverse roof rack system (includes a set of four Thule 480 Traverse Feet, set of 1204 Traverse Fit Kit clips and a pair of 50 inch load bars with end caps). Secondly, you have the option to also use the Thule 480R Rapid Traverse roof rack system (includes a Thule 480R Rapid Traverse Foot Pack, a set of the same 1204 Traverse Fit Kit clips and a pair of RB53 53" Rapid Aero load bars with end caps). This system works exactly the same way as the regular 480 Traverse roof rack system except that you will be using the premium Thule Rapid Aero load bars instead of the classic square load bars included with the regular 480 Traverse roof rack system. Both include great instructions for an easy install. We also have helpful videos on each of the product pages.
SURFBOARD CARRIERS
You can then connect the surfboard carrier to the roof rack load bars. We highly recommend selecting from a number of locking surfboard rack systems that include the Thule 809 Double Decker, Inno INA744 Board Locker and Yakima WaveHog surfboard racks. All will carry up to 3 surfboards. For lower cost options that are non-locking we recommend the Thule 554XT Hang-Two and Inno INA745 Board Crane surfboard racks.
