Question: I want to carry bicycles on the rear of my 2009 Honda Fit Sport (4-door hatchback model). I'm interested in options for both the rear hatch and a trailer hitch mount, though I don't have a hitch installed. Also what size trailer hitch would you recommend for an 09 Honda Fit Sport 4Dr? Thanks.
Answer: A trailer hitch mount rack is a superb option for your 2009 Honda Fit Sport 4Dr. Unfortunately no trunk bike racks are compatible due to the rear aero spoiler on the top of the rear hatch. The upper straps to any trunk bike rack would need to be placed over this and it would not be able to hold the weight of bikes and carrier.
For the 2009 Honda Fit Sport we recommend a 1-1/4" trailer hitch. This is easily installed at any local vehicle accessory dealer and your Honda dealer can possibly do it for you or at least point you in the right direction for a local installer. Both Thule and Yakima make great hitch bike racks for 1-1/4" trailer hitches. The first style are upright hitch bike racks (otherwise known as ‘hang & dangle’ style hitch bike racks that have an upright mast and bike arms that extend out at the top, allowing you to hang the bikes on the cradles located on the arms). From Thule Racks in this category the Thule 914XT RoadWay 4 bike hitch rack and Thule 912XT RoadWay 2 bike hitch rack are great options. Likewise from Yakima Racks in this category the Yakima DoubleDown 4 bike hitch rack and Yakima DoubleDown 2 bike hitch rack are superb options.
The second category is platform bike tray style hitch bike racks. Offers most convenience for quick loading and unloading of bicycles. The Yakima Hold Up and Thule 917XTR T2 are your best options in this category.
