Question: I just got a 2011 Nissan Cube and I am looking to purchase a base roof rack plus kayak racks for holding two recreational kayaks on the Nissan Cube rooftop. What do recommend? Thanks.
Answer: As of this writing (6/13/2011), we highly recommend the following configuration options for a 2011 Nissan Cube roof rack kayak carrier system...
You'll need to first install a multi-purpose base rack system on the 2011 Nissan Cube car top. With the general purpose roof rack in place, you can then attach the kayak carriers to the crossbars. For your vehicle we highly recommend the Thule 480 Traverse roof rack system (includes a set of four Thule 480 Traverse Feet, set of 1336 Traverse Fit Kit clips and a pair of 58 inch load bars with end caps). Additionally, you have the option to also use the Thule 480R Rapid Traverse roof rack system (includes a Thule 480R Rapid Traverse Foot Pack, a set of the same 1336 Traverse Fit Kit clips and a pair of RB60 60" Rapid Aero load bars with end caps). This system works exactly the same way as the regular 480 Traverse roof rack system except that you will be using the premium Thule Rapid Aero load bars instead of the classic square load bars included with the regular 480 Traverse roof rack system. From Yakima Racks you can use the Yakima Q Towers roof rack system (includes a set of four Q Towers, two pairs of Q31 clips and a pair of 58” cross bars with end caps). Likewise, Inno Racks offers the IN-SU roof rack base system (includes four Inno IN-SU Stays, set of Inno K370 Hooks and a pair of B147 58” cross bars with end caps; locks are also included with this system). All of these systems are very easy to install, include detailed instructions and you can do the install yourself in 30 minutes or less. Helpful videos are also included on each product page on our website.
With any of these base racks installed as a 2011 Nissan Cube roof rack, you can then connect any kayak carriers to the cross bars. Virtually all kayak racks are universal mounting, allowing you to choose the model that you like best, independent of whether it is the same manufacturer as the base rack system. In general you have three types of kayak rack options: 1) kayak saddles - carry the kayak laying flat / 2) kayak j-cradles - transport the kayak cradled on its side (great for when you need to carry multiple kayaks because the j-cradles use up less crossbar space than the kayak saddles style) / 3) kayak lift-assisting models - mostly kayak saddles with a rear roller that helps you to more easily load and unload the kayak, however some side-loading options are also available that work with j-cradles etc. Not Sure What Rack System Will Best Meet Your Needs?
