vehicle year / make / model: 2007 Honda CR-V

Question: Our canoe is 12' long with a 42" beam width and 82 lbs. We need a 2007 Honda CR-V roof rack to haul our 12' canoe placed upside down on the roof rack on some type of canoe carrier. The problem is that our Honda CR-V factory rack crossbars are only 40" in length, but we need to extend the bars to approx. 50". What do I need for this set-up?

Answer: We highly recommend replacing your current factory rack with the Thule 460 Podium roof rack system. This system is designed specifically for vehicles such as yours that have fixed attachment points on the rooftop provided by the vehicle manufacturer. The 460 Podium will replace your current 2007 Honda CR-V factory rack on your rooftop, and attaches to the same points your factory rack was installed on. The Thule 460 Podium system includes the Thule 460 Podium Foot Pack, a set of four Thule 3042 Fit Kit Brackets (these Fit Kit Brackets are specific to your Honda CRV) and two load bars. You will attach the canoe carrier directly to the 460 Podium front and rear cross bars. The 50 inch crossbars are the recommended length for your rooftop. This will allow enough space for your canoe with the 42" beam. You can then connect the Thule 579XT canoe rack directly to the Thule 460 Podium base rack system front and rear load bars. A superb canoe rack for transporting any canoe upside side resting on the gunwales.

vehicle year / make / model: 2009 Honda Accord 2 door

Question: I want to carry a kayak on my 2009 Honda Accord 2 door roof top. I realize that I will first need to install a base roof rack system on the rooftop and then attach the kayak rack to the base rack crossbars. But I looked at the Thule Racks fit guide and it looks like they have no car rack that works as a 2009 Honda Accord 2 door roof rack? Is this true, and if so do I have any other options.

Answer: You are correct that Thule Racks currently has no 2009 Honda Accord car rack system available for the 2 door model. However, Inno Racks offers an excellent option called the Inno IN-SU roof rack system. Fits your 09 Honda Accord 2 door perfectly. The Inno IN-SU system includes four Inno IN-SU Stays, four Inno K214 Fit Hooks (these Fit Hooks are specific to your vehicle) and two cross bars. You can then attach any Inno, Thule or Yakima kayak carriers directly to the front and rear cross bars.

Please note that because your 2009 2 door Honda Accord has a short roof line you will need to use the Inno IN-JK Joint Bars in combination with the IN-SU roof rack system. The IN-JK Joint Bars increase the distance between the front and rear crossbars for a very safe platform to allow you to then attach kayak carriers and other gear carriers.

D.L. of South Burlington, Vermont has the perfect setup for the easiest loading and unloading of kayaks on a car roof top. Her Saab 9-5 kayak roof racks and roller system is configured with a Yakima HullRaiser j-cradle style kayak rack and 2 pairs of Yakima Mako Saddles attached to a Saab aftermarket car rack that is, itself, mounted to the Saab 95 factory rack side rails. The Yakima ShowBoat roller is also connected to the base rack system. All D.L. has to do is extend out the roller when loading and unloading the kayaks for easy one person loading and unloading. Then she retracts the ShowBoat roller into its stored position when not in use. Just perfect D.L.!

His 2008 Toyota Tacoma kayak rack system consists of the Inno INA450 Kayak Rack Stacker mounted directly to the Toyota Tacoma double cab factory rack crossbars. Another great setup for carrying kayaks. These are from R.V.M. of Boston, Massachusetts and feature his 2007 Ford Focus 5-door roof rack setup for carrying 2 kayaks. He says the first trip was a great success from Boston to Provincetown and back! His configuration includes the Yakima Q Towers car rack multi-purpose base rack system, which attaches to the 2007 Ford Focus roof top using 2 pairs of Yakima Q102 clips (included with the Yakima Q Tower roof rack system). He then mounted two sets of Yakima BowDown kayak racks to the crossbars. We are very proud that A.V. of Montreal, Quebec made the trip down to our warehouse headquarters for his Fleetwood Tonka pop up camper roof rack installation. Question: My 2009 Ford Edge doesn't have any factory rack or siderails on the roof top currently. I am specifically interested in a silver style roof rack system that would give the car a nice modern european look. I don't really like all the black car racks that seem to be the only option available. Do I have any silver options?

Answer: Yes, in fact you have 2 options, currently, for a 2009 Ford Edge car rack system that features a silver finish. The first option is the Thule 400XTR Rapid Aero roof rack system. Now this option offers sleek aerodynamic silver cross bars. However the Foot Pack (also known as Towers) are still black. You would need the RB53 53" Rapid Aero load bars and the Thule 2191 Fit Kit for this system on the 09 Ford Edge.

The second option is the Inno INSU roof rack system that comes in a silver color. Both the Inno INSU Stays (also known as Towers) and the crossbars are silver. You would need the B147 58" crossbars and K559 Fit Hooks for use on your Ford Edge.

Question: I have a 10 foot Wilderness Perception Kayak that i can just barely lift and carry on my own. But I doubt that I can lift all the way onto the roof of the Toyota Highlander. The Toyota Highlander does have a factory rack installed with crossbars. Anything you can recommend that works on these factory bars and will make it easy to get my kayak up on top.

Answer: There are 3 excellent kayak rack options for making it easy to load your boat and are also compatible with your 2003 Toyota Highlander roof rack factory crossbars. Question: Hello. I'm currently looking at buying a popup camper from either Coleman Campers or Fleetwood Campers. My question is what I would need to use for a Coleman camper roof rack or Fleetwood pop up camper roof rack? They have roof tracks on them and they look to be about 76" to 78" apart from each other. It looks like the longest crossbars from Yakima Racks aand Thule Racks will not work as crossbars for pop up camper racks?

Answer: Excellent question. You are correct about needing very long cross bars if you want to install a Fleetwood camper roof rack or Coleman popup camper rack. Luckily, Thule Racks makes a special very long load bar specifically for camper rack use. It is the Thule LB96 and it's 96" long. You will use this as part of the Thule 430 Tracker II roof rack system. You'll also need to select the Thule TK1 Tracker Kit option as these TK Tracker Kits work with the Fleetwood roof tracks and Coleman roof tracks. If interested in using the Yakima Control Towers roof rack system instead, be aware that as of this writing (August 8, 2009) Yakima currently does not have a crossbar long enough, but they plan to introduce Yakima 88 inch length bars beginning January 2010. These extra long bars will work great for Fleetwood camper racks and Coleman camper roof racks.

Answer: You can absolutely carry a canoe on that car! We highly recommend the Thule 400XT Aero roof rack system for your 2006 Ford Focus 3 door. Also note that because your car has a short roof line, you will also need to use the Thule 477 Short Roof adapter kit. This allows the Thule 400XT Aero front and rear load bars to be distanced further apart, creating a safe foundation for transporting gear (especially important for long items such as a canoe). You can then connect the Thule 579XT canoe carrier to the Thule 400XT Aero base rack system load bars (the Thule 50 inch load bars are the recommended length for your car). You will also receive the Thule 2063 Fit Kit with the Thule 400XT Aero car rack system (these Fit Kits are designed specifically for use on your 2006 Ford Focus 3 door model). I've tried out the Hullavater on a friend's car rack and I really love how it works and makes it so easy to load / unload the kayak. I have to transport 2 kayaks so I need 2 Thule 897XT Hullavater kayak carriers.

Answer: Oh yeah you are right about how simple it is to get a kayak up onto the car roof using the Thule 897XT Hullavator kayak rack! The issue is that this carrier will not work on factory racks. So you'll first need to replace your 1998 Jeep Cherokee factory rack with the Thule 430 Tracker II roof rack system. This is very simple to do. Attaches directly to your 1998 Jeep Cherokee roof rack factory tracks, replacing your current noncompatible factory rack. You'll use the set of included Thule TK2 Tracker Kits. They easily connect right to the roof tracks that the factory rack was mounted to. The Thule 50" load bars are normally the recommended length for your Jeep Cherokee. But because you need two sets of Thule 897XT Hullavator kayak racks for hauling 2 kayaks, you should select the 58" length load bars instead. You'll then have enough room to mount 2 sets of Thule 897XT Hullavator kayak carriers.

Just received the following hilarious story from R.C. of Cornville, Arizona. He also sent pictures of his 2005 Scion xB roof rack setup for carrying bikes. His configuration includes the Yakima Q Towers car rack multi-purpose base rack system, which attaches to the 2005 Scion xB roof top using two pairs of Yakima Q121 clips and (included with the Yakima Q Tower roof rack system). He then mounted 4 Yakima 2085 Raptor bike racks to the Yakima Q Tower base rack system cross bars.

R.C. writes... "Four of my friends and I went on a little 100 mile road trip to ride our BMX bikes in Phoenix, Arizona. I had just installed my rack and we put four bikes on the roof and one in the back of my Scion xB. The day was perfect, we shredded the gnar all day and had a great time. When it was time to leave one of my buddies asked if we could go downtown to eat and have a drink at the bar. We all thought that was a great idea. When we got downtown there was no place to park. We searched and searched untill we finnaly found a spot. So I locked the bikes and we went in and had a couple drinks.

Well the drinks and food were so good that we ended up spending all the money we had left exept for gas to get home. We said goodbye to my friends sister and walked back to the car.... But the car was gone! It had been towed because I parked in the wrong spot. There was a small sign posted like twelve feet up and none of us saw it.

We then found out that we couldn't get our car back until 9:00am the next morning. We ended up sleeping in the streets. The next morning we had to take cab like thirty miles to where they said we could pick up the car. This costed us $30 that we didnt have. So we get to the towing company headquarters only to find out that we had to take another cab to where the car acually was. This was another $20 we didnt have on top of the $160 tow bill. I asked the tow company to give me a ride and they said "no way".

Finally we get to where the car was by 11:00am the next morning and there was no one around. So my friends and I being really frustrated and upset decided to hop the fence to see if there was anyone there. Maybe we had the wrong entrance to the yard or something. It's hard to think straight when you havent slept. Well there was no one around to help us and we did not know what to do. That's when the cops showed up and arrested us! We shouldn't have hopped the fence. Luckily the tow guy showed up and got us out of the buglary charges. After this all happened we were able to barely make it home on what gas we had left at around 3:00pm the next day. Moral of the story is: Don't ever get your car towed while on a road trip!"

Question: Was hoping you guys could help me out with choosing a 2006 Nissan Murano roof rack system. For specifics my 2006 Nissan Murano has a naked car roof top with no factory rack or anything. Question: I have been searching for a 2005 Saturn VUE roof rack system to carry a kayak. My particular model has nothing whatsoever on the roof currently, no factory rack or side rails or anything. But so far I haven't had any luck from either Tule Racks or Yakima Racks. I'm having a hard time finding anything that is compatible. Am I totally out of luck or is there a solution I've somehow missed?

Answer: You are right about Yakima Racks and Thule Racks having no compatible 2005 Saturn Vue car rack solution at this time. However, Inno Racks is a very innovative car rack company and they have engineered a compatible solution. It is the Inno Racks IN-SU roof rack system. The Inno IN-SU car rack is made specifically for vehicles with naked rooftops such as the 2005 Saturn Vue. The Inno K536 Fit Hooks are designed for this vehicle (included with the Inno Racks complete IN-SU roof rack system). The Inno B127 50" length crossbars are recommended for the 05 Saturn Vue rooftop.

You can then attach any Inno, Yakima or Thule kayak rack to the IN-SU base rack system cross bars. A very nice kayak carrier to check out is the Inno Canoe-Kayak Locker rack.

Question: I have a 2007 Jeep Compass that includes what appear to be some type of factory siderails on the rooftop. The problem is that they are solid and have no holes or openings that would allow an after-market roofrack cross bar system to attach to these 2007 Jeep Compass factory side rails. FYI, I do already have in my possession two Tule Racks j-style kayak carriers and would really like a compatible roofrack system that would allow me to attach my Tule kayak racks. Thanks for any help on this.

Answer: The 2007 Jeep Compass side rails are really just for 'rugged good looks'. But Jeep did include four fixed point attachments on these "side rails". This allows for the mounting of the Thule 460 Podium roof rack system to these fixed attachment points. The Thule 3067 Fit Kit brackets are the specific Fit Kit made for the 2007 Jeep Compass (these Fit Kit brackets are included with the Thule 460 Podium complete roof rack system) and connect to the 2007 Jeep Compass fixed-points. The 50 inch Thule load bars are the recommended length for the 2007 Jeep Compass roof top. These load bars are long enough for you to attach both of your j-cradle style kayak racks.

Question: Do you know if I have any options for a roofbag that doesn't need a rack. My new Hyundai Elantra Touring has no roofrack being made for it yet and we are going on a camping trip where we need a bit more storage space.

Answer: Roof bags require some type of roof rack system. However, you are in luck because Inno Racks now has a 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring roof rack solution. 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 2 door with camper shell

Question: Hello, I own a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab. I recently purchased a 14' kayak and would like to buy a kayak truck rack system to use with it. I already have a Thule kayak rack that I can use with the system. I would prefer to use a hitch mounted bed extender (like the Thule 997 Goal Post or Yakama Racks DryDock) and a half rack on the Dodge Ram 1500 cab of the pickup truck. Since I have a fiberglass truck bed cap, this will allow me access to the truck bed while not having to remove the kayak. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Answer: We highly recommend the Thule 400XT Aero Half Pack system / Thule 997 Goal Post combination. You can then attach your kayak rack to the Thule 400XT Aero Half Pack system / Thule 997 GoalPost combination load bars. 2007 Honda Odyssey

Question: Looking for some help in selecting a 2007 Honda Odyssey roof rack system that will allow me to carry a canoe and a kayak at the same time. The 2007 Honda Odyssey does already have the factory side rails on it (the 2 bars that run parallel to each other from the front to back of the car on the driver side and passenger side. Thanks!

Answer: We highly recommend the Thule 450 Crossroad complete base rack system. Attaches directly to your 2007 Honda Oddyssey factory rack side rails, converting your factory rack side rails into a sturdy base rack system capable of safely transporting all your gear. Includes a set of four Thule 450 Crossroad Feet and a pair of load bars. The 58" load bars are the recommended length for transporting a canoe and kayak.

Next, we highly recommend for your needs the Thule 835PRO Hull-A-Port kayak rack. Uses a j-cradle design for easy loading/unloading of your kayak. Uses up very little load bar space so you'll have room to attach the canoe rack next to it. The Thule 835XTR Hull-A-Port is exactly the same as the 835PRO except the cradles cannot be folded down.

Finally, you can then attach the Thule 579XT canoe rack directly to the Thule 450 Crossroad base rack cross bars. Includes a pair of heavy-duty securing straps. Also includes a pair of Thule 885 Quick-Draw tie-down straps to fully secure the front and rear of the canoe for very safe and worry free canoe transport.

Another very handy accessory is the Thule 854 Water Slide Mat. Simply attaches to the rear load bar and simultaneously protects the rear of your vehicle and makes it easier to slide the canoe into position on the canoe rack.

Question: I have factory installed siderails on the roof of my 2006 Ford Explorer. There are no cross members however. What solution do you recommend for adding a car rack setup to carry a canoe. I would like a system that allows for one person loading if possible. I want something that connects to the Ford Explorer factory mounted side rails.

Answer: You will first need a multi-purpose base roofrack system that attaches to the Ford Explorer factory side rails. You'll then be able to connect the canoe rack to the multi-purpose base rack system cross members. An excellent solution is the Thule 450 Crossroad roof rack. You can then connect the Thule 579XT canoe rack directly to the Thule 450 Crossroad roofrack cross members.

As far as addressing a method to make it easier to load the canoe by yourself, we highly recommend also getting the Thule 854 WaterSlide mat. This accessory connects to the rear cross member on the Thule 450 Crossroad base rack system. Then you lay it flat across the rear of the car roof and down the back of the car. Then you can just lift the front of the canoe up onto the Thule 854 Water Slide and then you can lift the rear of the canoe and slide it onto the canoe rack brackets. The Thule 854 Waterslide protects your car from coming in contact with the canoe and also the mat has a non-slip underside so it won't bunch up or move around while you are sliding the canoe up into position on the canoe rack.

Question: I need some type of roofrack system to carry my Burley tandem bike on the 09 Pontiac Vibe. It doesn't have any kind of factory roofrack rack on it currently. Ideally, base rack would work for a canoe also. Thanks for the help!

Answer: We highly recommend the Inno IN-SU roof rack system as a 2009 Pontiac Vibe car rack solution. You will then be able to connect any tandem bike racks directly to the Inno IN-SU roof rack crossbars. The Thule 558 tandem bike rack is an excellent option. Also the RockyMounts R4 tandem bike rack connects directly to the base rack crossbars. Same great features as the Thule Racks tandem bike rack option and you save some money. Also the Thule 579XT canoe rack will connect directly to the Inno square crossbars. If you intend to carry a canoe and tandem bike at the same time then you will want to choose the longer B147 58" Inno bars, otherwise the Inno B107 46" length bars will be fine. The inno K244 Fit Hooks are the specific Fit Hooks you will need for the 2009 Pontiac Vibe.

Wouldn't you love to see how the trip went...? Good chance he ended up doin' some unintended off roadin' somewhere. Check the 'hills' in the background. Howja like to meet this rig on a two-lane road...coming down the mountain in your direction...?

She's hitched up and ready to roll!! Amazin' how the extra weight smoothes out the ride. Needed to air up the rear tires a bit ('bout 160 psi).

Added some super heavy-duty chain for extra support on the tailgate, (note the 'Heavy-Duty 'S' hooks to attach the chain) Also paid-up for some BIG Number 5/16 sheet metal screws to attach the Reese hitch frame to the tailgate (see 'em there? one on each side...) Likely two more through the carpet into the floor pan inside... Yep, probably overkill, but didn't want the possibility of having an axerdent.
