Question: My 2000 Ford Ranger regular cab pick up truck has a tonneau cover on the truckbed, so I'm have a hard time figuring out what to use for a canoe rack. It does have a rear trailer hitch receiver if there's anything that'll work on it. Thanks for any help!
Answer: As of this writing (2/18/2011), we highly recommend the following pickup truck canoe rack options for your 2000 Ford Ranger regular cab pickup truck that has a tonneau cover installed...
CAB ROOF / TRAILER HITCH COMBINATION SYSTEM
This is the most popular configuration for pickup trucks that have a tonneau cover installed. For the cab rooftop you will want to go with the Yakima Q Towers Half Pack roof rack system. Includes two Q Towers, two Q4 clips (made specifically for your 2000 Ford Ranger cab roof) and a single cross bar (the 58" length cross bar is the recommended size for your cab roof). The Yakima Q Towers Half Pack roof rack mounts to the cab roof using the pair of Yakima Q4 clips. Likewise, Thule Racks offers the Thule 400XT Aero Half Pack roof rack system. Includes two 400XT Aero Feet, two 56 Fit Kit clips (made specifically for your 2000 Ford Ranger cab roof) and a single cross bar (the 58" length cross bar is the recommended size for your cab roof). The Thule 400XT Aero Half Pack roof rack mounts to the cab roof using the pair of Thule 56 Fit Kit clips.
You will then want to mount either the Yakima DryDock hitch rack or the Thule 997 GoalPost hitch rack to a rear 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. Also select a single 58 inch cross bar to use with the DryDock (option to add cross bar with DryDock purchase is available on the Yakima DryDock product page). If selecting the Thule 997 GoalPost, you do not need to also purchase a single crossbar as the Thule 997 GoalPost includes a single 58 inch cross bar already.
Finally, we then highly recommend using the Yakima Gunwale Brackets canoe rack if you are using the Yakima Q Towers Half Pack / DryDock hitch rack system. The Thule 579XT canoe rack is recommended for use with the Thule 400XT Aero Half Pack / 997 GoalPost hitch rack system. You will connect two Yakima Gunwale Bracket saddles or two 579XT canoe carrier saddles to the front Yakima Q Towers or Thule 400XT Aero cross bar and the other pair of Yakima Gunwale Bracket saddles or two 579XT canoe carrier saddles to the rear DryDock or 997 GoalPost crossbar.
