Question: I want to put a canoe on the roof of a 2012 Chevy Equinox that currently has no factory roof rack crossbars or side rails or anything on the rooftop. What do you suggest for 2012 Chevrolet Equinox canoe rack system components? Thanks.
Answer: As of this writing (7/18/2012), Yakima Racks is the only company that offers a solution for carrying a canoe on the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox that currently has nothing on the roof top. And what an excellent Yakima canoe rack system it is...
You will need to first install a multi-purpose base rack crossbars system on the 2012 Chevy Equinox car top. With the general purpose roof rack in place, you can then attach the canoe carrier to the base rack crossbars. For the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox we highly recommend the Yakima Q Towers roof rack system (includes a set of four Yakima Q Towers, two pairs of Q 132 clips and a pair of cross bars with end caps; the 48" length cross bars are recommended for the Chevy Equinox, however you have the option of selecting longer length cross bars if you require additional crossbar space for your canoe and/or other items transported).
We then highly recommend mounting the Yakima Gunwale Brackets canoe rack system to the Yakima Q Towers base rack cross bars. This is a superb canoe carrier and also includes a pair of heavy-duty canoe straps for tying down the canoe. For complete canoe transport safety at all times, we also suggest purchasing a pair of Yakima Bow & Stern tie-downs to fully secure the front and back of the canoe.
