The complete Thule 400XT Aero roof rack system is the multi-purpose base rack solution for cars and truck cabs without rain gutters or factory racks (a naked rooftop). The new Thule 400XT upgrades make it easier than ever to install. We highly recommend a four pack of Thule Locks (not included; see accessory add-ons below) to lock the rack to vehicle.
The Thule 400XT Aero complete roof rack system includes all 3 components that are necessary for installing a general-purpose base rack on your vehicle's roof top, providing the platform that will allow you to then connect roof mount gear carriers that carry your gear and equipment:
- Four (4) Thule 400XT Aero Feet.
- Four (4) Thule Fit Kit clips (specific to your vehicle; see ordering notes below).
- Two (2) Thule Load bars (bar end caps included).
Protective surfaces on rack prevent shifting and protect car's paint. No tools required for assembly; easy-to-follow installation instructions manual included. I have never owned a vehicle with a factory rack, but I imagine that this Thule car rack is just as effective! I love the extra space in my car and I am not concerned about damage to the outside. This rack is great because it is removable and easy to install. I did it myself! It seems very safe and it is very affordable.

The rack is definitely secure which was my #1 concern. Installation was a bit confusing, but it was completed within 30 minutes. Luckily, I haven't experienced much noise without a fairing and I do not plan on buying one. I put a piece of cloth between the feet and the roof of my car to prevent any marks and it seemed to work.

This rack is pretty good. It is durable and strong. Only one issue I have is that it is noisy at higher speeds. But I bought a fairing and it went away. Just wish I didn’t have to buy the fairing. Rack was expensive enough.

I just installed the Thule 400XT rack and it took me about 2 and a half hours to install. I found them very
difficult to work with, but I guess the thing that matters is how secure they are once they are installed. As far as that is concerned, they are very good, very secure feeling. Don’t think they are going anywhere anytime soon. The fit kit fits perfectly in my door frame and doesn’t interfere with the door or the gasket. I was worried that they would cause the car to leak in the rain, but they don’t. Again, a total pain to install, but very solid construction and secure once on there. I might suggest paying to have an expert install them for you.

I've been using Thule racks for years. They are pretty easy to install once you have the right fit kit! Make sure you have the right fit kit! I thought I could use the same Fit Kit from my older S40. Wrong! I recommend a fairing unless you enjoy high pitched whistling. Also, make sure you wipe the feet and the roof before you install. When I took the racks off the old car there were scuff marks left behind.

wiltie asks - I notice that your roof racks are mostly for sports equipment, bikes, kayaks, etc. We have a 2006 Honda Civic. Do you have any racks strong enough to support heavier loads, like 2x4's, sheet of plywood or other heavier type loads.

These racks are much stronger than factory racks. The Thule 400XT Aero car rack system fits your 2006 Honda Civic superbly and includes a set of Thule 2171 Fit Kit clips and pair of LB58 58" length load bars. You can then attach the Thule 503 Load Stops to the load bars. The general purpose Thule 503 Load Stops are an excellent carrier for ladders, lumber, plywood and much more.
Mary Lou asks - I have a Thule 400XT Aero rack with Yakima Hully Rollers on my 1998 Toyota Camry, which I'm selling. Buying a 2005 Saab 9-2x. Can I use the 400XT roofrack on the 2005 Saab 9-2x rooftop?
ORS Crew answers - Yes, you can use the Thule 400XT rack from your Toyota Camry and put it on the 2005 Saab 9-2x cartop. You will need the Thule 2153 Fit Kit. Simply use our Thule Fit Kits order page and select the 2153 Fit Kit. Please note that you will need to also use the Thule 477 Short Roof Adapter Kit along with the Thule 400XT rack. It effectively enables the load bars to be distanced further apart so you can safely transport long items such as a kayak on the Saab 9-2x.
Elizabeth Lorenz asks - I have a Thule roof rack which fits my former car, a 1993 Toyota Corolla station wagon. Now I drive a 1994, 4 door Ford Tempo. I'm hoping to save some money and still be able to use my current cross bars. Is the 400XT or 400XTR what I need for installing a 1994 Ford Tempo roof rack? Confused about exactly what I need. Thanks!
ORS Crew answers - You will want to use the Thule 400XT Aero Foot Pack (not the 400XTR version which requires different cross bars than the square ones you have now). Also, you will need a set of Thule 7 Fit Kit clips. The Thule 7 Fit Kit Clips are specifically made for use on the '94 Ford Tempo. They attach to the 400XT Aero Feet and are used for attaching the rack to the rooftop, custom form fitting to where the rooftop and upper door wells meet. You can connect your current cross bars to the Feet.
