The Thule 480 Traverse Half Pack roof rack system is a 1 cross bar roof rack system, serving as an ideal multi-purpose base rack solution for cars and trucks without rain gutters or factory racks and only need 1 Thule load bar and 2 Thule 480 Traverse Feet instead of the normal 2 load bars and 4 Thule 480 Traverse Feet. The Half Pack system is an especially great component for creating car & truck racks to transport canoes, kayaks, ladders, lumber etc on gutterless pickup truck cabs and car roof tops when used in combination with a rear receiver hitch T-mast style rack (see image below for this configuration) or a pickup truckbed rack. For example, use a Thule 480 Traverse Half Pack roof rack system up front on the car rooftop or pickup truck cab roof and a Thule 997 Goal Post hitch mount T-mast style kayak / canoe / ladder rack (sold separately; see accessory add-ons below) on the rear of your vehicle. Or use the 480 Traverse Half Pack system up front and a Thule Xsporter truck rack system (sold separately; see accessory add-ons below) in the pickup truckbed.
The complete Thule 480 Traverse Half Pack roof rack system includes all 3 components that are necessary to attach two 480 Traverse Feet & one load bar to your pickup truck cab roof or car roof top:
- Two (2) 480 Traverse Feet.
- Two (2) Thule Traverse Fit Kit clips (specific to your vehicle; see ordering notes below. You may receive all four Traverse Fit Kit Clips, since a majority of the Thule Traverse Fit Kit Clip models are not offered as just one pair).
- One (1) Thule square load bar. (bar end caps included).

I got this rack to use with my 09 Ford F150 supercrew for transporting a canoe. Fitting took some time as my actual measurements didn't agree with the instructions, but now installation takes 3 to 5 min. tops. I wish the rack wasn't quite so low profile as the tip of the canoe comes awful close to the roof when loading and transporting (short canoe). Also the rack deflects about 1/4-1/2" from the weight of the canoe bringing the bow tip ever closer to the roof line. The mounts fit *almost perfect* and it certainly feels secure. The tightening system is classy. I am using the Thule 997 Goal Post T shape mount on the back of the truck and while solid, gives a little more than I'd like. Definitely need the securing straps to tighten the mount. My biggest gripe is the Fit Kit clips come in packs of 4 and I only need 2? Bottom line: Works good and looks nice, but it's Thule and you pay for the quality.

Ross D. asks - I own a 2010 Chevy Silveraldo ext cab. and am looking for a 1 bar rack to put on the cab when carrying a canoe. Is this the Thule 1 bar roof rack that I need?
ORS Crew answers - Yes, you will want to go with this Thule 480 Half Pack roof rack system (select the 1532 Fit Kit and at least the 58" length cross bar). The 1532 Traverse Fit Kit is designed for the 2010 Chevy Silverado cab rooftop. Your cab roof width also requires that you go with at least the 58 inch length cross bar (or longer if you want).
Steve A. asks - I have a 2011 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab with 6' box and fiberglass cap. There are no factory rails on either the truck or the cap. I want a roof rack with a single crossbar on the pickup truck cab rooftop and also a roof rack with two cross bars on the fiberglass cap. Would be ideal to be able to move the cap rack to different positions depending on what I am carrying. Is the 480 Traverse 1 cross bar rack the correct system for the 2011 Toyota Tacoma cab, and what do you suggest for the fiberglass cap on the truck bed?
ORS Crew answers - Great set up Steve, yes the 480 Half Pack is what you want (select the 1511 Fit Kit clips and the 58”, or longer, single cross bar). The Yakima Q Tower Half Pack would also work (select the Q128 clips and the 58”, or longer, single crossbar). A roof rack mounted to permanently installed roof tracks on the fiberglass cap is a superb solution. Go with the Thule TB60 60" Tracks and the Thule 460 Podium roof rack (select the 3101 Podium Fit Kit and pair of 58 inch crossbars, or longer). From Yakima you could use the Yakima 60" or 54" Tracks and the Yakima Control Towers roof rack system (select the LP1 Landing Pads and pair of 58 inch cross bars, or longer). The tracks can also be easily cut to any shorter length if needed.
Brent asks - Does this fit a 2003 Chevy Silverado 4dr ext. cab?
ORS Crew answers - Yes this is a confirmed and sanctioned fit. The 1522 Traverse Fit Clips are the correct clips to use, and the 58" length load bar is the recommended length for the 2003 Chevy Silverado 4DR ext. cab roof.
