The Thule 487 Traverse Short Roof Adapter Kit is one component of a complete roof rack base system and works in combination with the Thule 480 Traverse car rack and Thule 480R Rapid Traverse roof rack by making them adaptable to certain cars with 2 doors and other hard to fit cars, minivans and pickup trucks with dramatically curved rooftops, short roof lines etc. The Thule 487 Short Roof Adaptor integrates with either the Thule 480 Traverse roof rack system or Thule 480R Rapid Traverse car rack system to extend the cross bar spread between the front and rear base rack system load bars. This increase in distance between the front and rear cross bars allows you to then safely mount any Thule roof mount gear carriers onto the rack bars to carry all types of gear, even long loads such as ladders, lumber, canoe, kayaks etc. We recommend using our handy Thule Racks automated fit guide (see below) to determine if your car, pickup truck or minivan requires the Thule 487 short roof adapter.

Used this along with 480 Traverse Foot Pack, 1557 Fit Kit, 58" load bars, and (2) 835XTR-Hull-A-Port kayak carriers. I also recently added the 872XT fairing to eliminate wind noise. This short roof adaptor is a must for anyone looking to install a rack on a 2DR Honda Civic. Quick easy install and this thing is rock solid once in place. The entire setup works like a champ for carrying our kayaks!

(PLEASE NOTE: this review also includes the Thule 480 Traverse Roof Rack System). After having a truck to get my surf boards to and from the beach for years, I had to downsize to a smaller car for commuting purposes. I assumed that I could put a quality surf rack on any car without much trouble and without spending an arm and a leg. Unfortunately, I started searching for a rack for my 3-door Ford Focus and quickly found that this was not the case. My car had no existing rack, no gutters and a very short/domed roof. I visited several retail stores and called numerous online vendors, only to be told either that there was no option for my vehicle, or that it was going to cost about $800 to put a simple rack on. All I really needed was two cross bars that were spread out enough to get longboards to and from the beach...$800 seemed ridiculous. I had literally given up and was using a worthless soft rack that was sure to result in my boards flying off the roof. Then, I was checking the surf online when I saw an ad for ORS Racks Direct. I had been so frustrated with trying to piece together a system for my car, that I decided to call for help before placing my order. Whoever I spoke to on the phone was a god send! This guy totally knew the product line and was able to tell me exactly what I needed in about two minutes. He was even aware of the issue of the cross bars being too close together for my longboards, and told me that this could easily be resolved with the short roof extension kit. He told me exactly what I needed to order, and walked me through doing so on the website. The website was super easy to navigate and left me extremely confident that I was ordering the right products. Best of all...when I checked out, my total was just over $400! Half of what I had been quoted for the same systems elsewhere! Everything arrived on time, in prefect condition and was crazy easy to install. I honestly cannot say enough about my buying experience with ORS Racks Direct. These days it seems that you always have to compromise something when you make a purchase...either you get good service and the price is too high, or you get a great price and the quality is poor, etc. But in this case, I feel like I truly got it all. Hats off to you guys for doing a great job. Bottom line...you can buy your rack system through ORS and know that you are getting the best product, at the best price, from someone that actually knows what you need and how it will work. Thank you!

Noah says - The 487 works like a champ on my 2009 Honda Civic 2DR. Paired this with the 480 Traverse Foot Pack, 1557 Fit Kit and (2) 835 XTR Hull-A-Port kayak carriers. I also recently added a Thule 872XT Fairing. The entire setup works and looks great for carrying my kayak!
