Improving on the Thule 835XTR Hull-a-Port (which does not have fold down capability), the all-new Thule 835PRO Hullaport includes Thule Racks P.F.D. lever (which stands for Pull, Fold, Done), which rapidly folds the kayak rack down eliminating any clearance issues users sometimes have with j-style kayak racks. Pull into garages and low overhead spaces without worries when the Thule 835 PRO is folded down. Improved aerodynamics and very clean, sleek appearance as well. The included universal mounts allow this kayak carrier to fasten to all styles of Thule Racks load bars (square, oval Rapid Aero & Xsporter truck rack), virtually all factory installed base rack cross bars, Yakima Racks round bars, Inno Racks crossbars & other aftermarket roof rack systems.
The Thule 835PRO kayak rack is designed to work with all types of kayak makes and shapes. And the j-style design makes it very easy for just one person to load a kayak. Simply place one end of the kayak into one of the cradles, then allowing that cradle to do the heavy lifting simply place the other end of the kayak into the other cradle. The clever semi-vertical, j-cradle design also uses up less base rack crossbar space than other kayak racks that transport a kayak flat, providing plenty of room for another 835PRO Hull-a-Port Pro or other gear carriers at the same time. Compatible with any kayak style including sea/ocean, recreational, whitewater kayaks etc. Includes front and rear folding Thule 835 PRO cradles. Includes all hardware, 2 heavy-duty straps, buckle bumpers and a pair of Thule 855 Quickdraw ratcheting tie down straps for securing kayak bow and stern during transport.
PLEASE NOTE: The Thule 835XTR Hull-a-Port kayak rack is very similar except that it is not capable of folding down.

Worry Free Vacation

We have had a kayak for over a year and never felt at all secure in traveling very far or vary fast (30 - 35 miles per hour) with the kayak on our roof. Also, our previous mounting system took a long time to set up. The Thule 835 Pro Hull-a-Port kayak rack changed all of that. Since we mounted the Hull-a-Port onto our Honda CRV factory installed rack, we are able to get the kayak up and secured on the car in 5 - 10 minutes. On our recent vacation, we traveled over 100 miles at highway speeds (I preferred to stay at 60 mph because of high cross winds) and the rack worked just great! The added benefit of fold down, lets us get up and going on a moments notice. I highly recommend this along with the Thule 854 Water Slide Mat which makes the loading process go very smoothly.

With the help of staff at ORS Racks Direct in choosing the right rack for my 2 SOT kayaks I chose the 835PRO Hull-a-Port and it is without a doubt the right choice for me. The fact that it folds down flat allows me to still use the garage without worry and it looks and works great. The cradles hold the kayaks in place and the strap system and bow and stern hold downs are very easy and simple to use, great design. They mounted on my 2008 Rav4 factory racks with ease.

I recently took up kayaking and bought a kayak upon which I realized that I needed to make another purchase, and that of course was a kayak rack for my car. I wanted a J-style that would attach directly to my factory crossbars, and when I started looking, I was amazed at all the choices. I was ready to go with the Thule 835 XT, but was talked into the 835 Pro because of the fact that it folds down flat when not in use. I am glad I made that decision because I’m not always going kayaking, unfortunately, and when I see other cars on the road with their empty J-cradles sticking up in the air, I can’t help but feel a bit smug when my racks are nice and flat. Anyway, as far as the performance of the rack, it is great. It is very well padded and the fold-down lever works great. My boat is 15' long and it has no problem holding it securely on myroof. It was also a cinch to install, and I know it will be equally as hassle free when I take them off for the winter. Anyone looking for a J-cradle should look no further than the 835 Pro.

I am a fan of the Thule Hullaport Pro. So much in fact, that I decided to write about it on your review page. I mean, what is there not to like about it? It went on to my crossbars with ease, it is very well made and very protective of my boat. I especially like the fold down feature, which is very extrememly easy to activate, and it comes with straps and tie downs to boot. Great kayak carrier. Great purchase. I wish everything could be this simple.

Karen F. asks - How long do the car rack crossbars need to be to install 2 sets of 835XTR or 835PRO Hull-a-ports? I have a factory rack and am concerned about having enough room to attach two sets for carrying 2 kayaks.
ORS Crew answers - No worries with factory racks. In both cases, the measurements are just about 12", measured from the top of the upper/long support cradle over to the starting edge of the shorter/lower support (see image above). So 12 inches is really all that each cradle takes up on the crossbars. Of course if using 2 sets for carrying two kayaks you'll need to observe a bit of extra crossbar space for the kayak extending beyond the upper cradle so that the tops of the kayaks do not interfere with each other. But you can see you'll be fine with using two sets of the 835XTR or 835PRO for carrying 2 kayaks on factory bars. (FYI, total width from the top of the longer/upper cradle to the top of the shorter/lower cradle is 18", however the lower cradle can extend out from the edge of the crossbar if needed.)
ORS Crew says - This carrier works on oversize, large-diameter factory rack crossbars such as the Nissan XTerra, as well as the Thule-DeWalt 375 / 376 PRO truck racks, however you will also need to use the Thule Xadapt 3 Kit (includes 80mm long bolts) to properly mount it to the Nissan XTerra factory rack bars.
Massachusetts 2 says - I bought two of these racks for my Toyota Highlander – they work great. I’m glad I purchased the folding racks as clearance (garage etc.) would have been an issue. The racks were quick to install and they are on for the season. I’ve carried two 40 lb kayaks on the car with zero problems. Once the kayaks are strapped down correctly, they don’t move. I’m very satisfied.
Eva asks - I want to use two sets of these carriers on my 2003 Nissan Frontier crew cab factory side rails to haul 2 kayaks. I need a base rack cross bars system that attaches to the side rails correct?
ORS Crew answers - Yes, we recommend the Thule 45050 Crossroad roof rack. Quickly attaches to the 2003 Nissan Frontier factory side rails. You can then connect two sets of 835PRO carriers to the crossbars for carrying your 2 kayaks.
TigerKayaker asks - Will the 835PRO Hull-a-Port (or any other Thule kayak racks) work on Inno roof rack cross bars?
ORS Crew answers - Yes, all Thule kayak carriers will attach directly to Inno crossbars. Inno bars are the exact same dimensions as Thule square bars.
Dennis asks - I have a Malibu Two Ocean Kayak that I would like to carry on my Honda Pilot factory rack crossbars. Will the Thule 835PRO be suitable? It is a tandem sit-on-top kayak and is 34" wide. Is it too wide for this carrier. Any better alternatives?
ORS Crew answers - It accommodates kayaks up to 34" wide and up to 75 lbs, so you really are good to go with the 835PRO, we routinely sell these to owners of similar tandem SOT kayaks. A saddle style carrier that transports the kayak flat instead of cradled on its side is another option. The Thule 883 Glide & Set, Thule 844 Roll Model and Thule 887XT SlipStream are all great options in this kayak saddles category.
