And the Thule 835XTR HullaPort j-style design makes it very easy for just one person to load a kayak. Simply place one end of the kayak into one of the cradles, then allowing that cradle to do the heavy lifting simply place the other end of the kayak into the other cradle. Generous padding gently cradles your kayak and ensures snug & secure positioning during transport.
The clever semi-vertical, j-cradle design also uses up less base rack crossbar space than other kayak racks that transport a kayak flat, providing plenty of room to attach other gear carriers at the same time, including extra Thule 835XTR Hull-a-Port kayak carriers if you plan to haul multiple kayaks. Bought this online while snow was on the ground. Snapped it on, loaded the kayak, and was kayak fishing in under an hour! Too easy, the on-line experience was beyond simple. Everything fit and the kayak loads simply.

I was skeptical about how well it would fit my vehicle so I just ordered 1 set to try it out. As soon as I got the set installed I immediately ordered a second set. Installation was a breeze, loading the kayaks was easy plus it complemented my vehicle's looks. I HIGHLY recommend this product!!! I would be glad to show pictures of how well it fits and looks on my vehicle.

I use the 835XTR mostly on my 2008 Acura MDX. But I do have a need to transfer it over to my wife's Toyota Highlander on occasion. So for me the most important feature was the ability to transfer well from one vehicle factory rack to another's. I watched the various videos and such about kayak racks and definitely came away feeling the Thule 835XTR was right for me. I'm glad this was my decision because I can't stress enough what a breeze it is to mount this kayak rack to both the Acura MDX factory bars and the Toyota Highlander factory bars. Tule definitely went all out to engineer a universal clamping system that goes on ultra quick and fits very snugly no matter what the crossbar shape is. I have noticed that some of the other j-cradle style carriers have a ramp integrated onto the bottom of each cradle to aid in sliding the kayak onto the rack. The Thule 835XTR doesn't have that but I've never wished I had an extra aid to load the boat or anything. I just lift the front end of the kayak into the front j-cradle and then lift the back end into the rear cradle. It's pretty effortless, and I'm certainly no he-man or anything!

Karen F. asks - How long do the car rack crossbars need to be to install 2 sets of 835XTR or 835PRO Hull-a-ports? I have a factory rack and am concerned about having enough room to attach two sets for carrying 2 kayaks.
ORS Crew answers - No worries with factory racks. In both cases, the measurements are just about 12", measured from the top of the upper/long support cradle over to the starting edge of the shorter/lower support (see image above). So 12 inches is really all that each cradle takes up on the crossbars. Of course if using 2 sets for carrying two kayaks you'll need to observe a bit of extra crossbar space for the kayak extending beyond the upper cradle so that the tops of the kayaks do not interfere with each other. But you can see you'll be fine with using two sets of the 835XTR or 835PRO for carrying 2 kayaks on factory bars. (FYI, total width from the top of the longer/upper cradle to the top of the shorter/lower cradle is 18", however the lower cradle can extend out from the edge of the crossbar if needed.)
ORS Crew says - This kayak carrier works on the Thule-DeWalt 375 PRO / 376 PRO truck rack load bars. Just be sure to use the Thule Xadapt 3 Kit.
TC asks - Does Thule have a locking system available that prevents the Hull a Port J cradle from being stolen? There must be a way to lock it to the roof rack?
DR5 responds - Tule doesn't have an integrating locking system to lock the kayak carrier to the car rack. That's why I went with the Yakima BowDown, which will lock to the car using a 2 pack of Yakima locks.
Jessica asks - Would this type of kayak rack even work on the odd shaped racks of a 2008 Nissan Xterra?
ORS Racks Direct crew answers - Yes it works on oversize, large-diameter factory rack crossbars such as the Nissan XTerra, however you will also need to use the Thule Xadapt 3 Kit (includes 80mm long bolts) to properly mount it to the Nissan XTerra factory rack bars.
John asks - I have a '08 Subaru Outback wagon with factory roof rack bars. I have two kayaks and would like to know if I can carry both kayaks using 2 set of the 835 XTR Hull-a-Port racks and if this would be a good match.
ORS Crew answers - Yes, two sets of these for hauling 2 kayaks is an ideal match for the 2008 Subaru Outback factory rack crossbars. By far one of the most popular choices Subaru Outback owners go with for carrying two kayaks.
Kit Carlson asks - Will this fit the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid factory roof rack crossbars? Also can I attach 2 sets for carrying 2 kayaks? Thanks.
ORS Crew answers - Yes, the Thule 835PRO Hull-a-Port j-cradles kayak rack is a confirmed fit for the factory bars, a great choice for 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid kayak racks. You will have room to attach 2 sets of these on the crossbars if you want to carry 2 kayaks.
