The Thule 854 Water Slide Mat is an ingeniously simple way to protect your vehicle’s finish when you’re loading and unloading a boat from a canoe rack or kayak rack. The Thule 854 Water Slide Mat has a non-skid underside and two bar straps that hold the mat in place while the smooth top surface allows your canoe or kayak to slide easily onto a car rooftop canoe rack or kayak rack. Makes Loading a Kayak a Snap!

When I ordered the Thule 835 Pro Hull-a-Port kayak rack recently, I also ordered the Thule 854 Water Slide Mat. My wife thought that this was an extra not needed. Since the kayak rack arrived first, we got to try loading the kayak without the Water Slide Mat. The scratches on the car were not pretty. After receiving the Mat, we were able to utilize the back of the car as leverage without scratches to the paint surface. My wife is now converted to a Water Slide Mat proponent. I highly recommend this as an accessory for loading your kayak.
Necessity with Larger Kayaks

We transport a tandem Ocean Kayak Malibu Two XL which is a large kayak. The slide mat makes mounting the boat to the Thule kayak rack much easier and the Toyota Highlander appreciates not getting all scratched up.

Thule 854 Water Slide is a great product and I would say if you are loading a kayak or canoe on top of a new vehicle, this is a MUST have product for such low cost. It will also save your back when sliding the kayak on to the vehicle roof. It rolls up nice and neat in my car and I just leave it in the car all the time.

The Water Slide pad has made life so much easier to load and unload our canoe onto our canoe roofrack. Such an ingenious product. All I do is quickly strap the Water Slide onto the rear roofrack crossbar and then lay the mat over the rear of the car. I just have to lift the front of the canoe onto the Water Slide pad. Then I can slide the canoe onto the roofrack without worrying about the canoe scuffing up the finish on our Toyota Sienna. The non-slip underside prevents the mat from moving at all when the canoe is sliding up onto or off of the canoe rack too. Nice to see a cheap solution to such a common problem.
