Wind Resistance Blows (Right Over the Rack With This Fairing!)

Looks awesome, reduces noise, affirms my love of all things Swedish (mounted on my Saab). A bit more plastic and less than super-secure appearing fixtures at some points, but it went together pretty well and fit nicely on the car. I suspect it is engineered adequately and if it ever fails, it will be because of the cheapest parts. Thule Racks lifetime warranty is nice!

When adding a roof rack to any vehicle, the inherent wind noise can be substantially reduced by utilizing a Fairing. The Thule line of wind deflectors install easily and compliment the look of your vehicle. I would have to say a rack without a fairing looks somewhat incomplete. In all, the fairing adds a sleek look and cuts down on wind noise. What could be a better addition to your rack system?

The Thule fairing is of high quality materials, and workmanship. The plastic brackets feel substantial and durable with good finish. It does not chatter or move at all up to 75mph. Clear instructions and pictures. The rubber bushings are difficult to keep in place during assembly however. Bracket attachments require removal of rubber top strip on Rapid Aero bars. The fitment is basically "universal" which results in an issue when applied to vehicles with moon roofs, and stylized roof rails. On the Freestyle, this fairing prohibits the use of the moon roof, and also requires mounting the Rapid Aero cross bars so that the foot partially rests on top of the plastic trim of the stock roof rail. Many new CUV/SUV's have rails which would be incompatible with this fairing. I would like to see Thule address this with an adjustable extension bracket kit to set the fairing forward an extra 6-10". Overall a great product but not perfect application for the Ford Freestyle.

I got the fairing to help with the "whistling" noise reported by others. I have heard no whistling with the fairing but I haven't tried without it yet. I had read reports that the 48" fairing might fit better on a 2008 WRX, and it might- there is plenty of room on both sides of the 44". Fairings are supposed to help with whistling noises and fuel mileage but I haven't tested that yet. The fairing DOES reduce buffeting from my sunroof when the canoe is not on the car but it also increases the wind noise. It looks pretty good though, and while it was the hardest part of my system (Podium rack and 579XT Carrier) to install - that doesn't mean it was very difficult! About ten minutes total time to assemble and install.

WiN asks - I see that it fits the Rapid Aero bars which have the t-slot so I am hoping that this would also fit on oem votex roof racks with the t-slot as well?
ORS Crew answers - Thule fairings don't fit Votex rack crossbars unfortunately, since Votex bars have a bit different dimension than the Thule Rapid Aero load bars so the fairing mounting hardware won't fit. We suggest using the Inno fairing instead.
christopherw asks - Hi, I just bought the 872xt from a local bike shop today, they said it fits my 2009 mercedes ml350, but when I got home installing it, I found that the oem crossbars are too thick. Are there any ways to solve the problem?
Jarvis7 answers - I had a similar problem when I bought the fairing for my factory rack. Found out after that faring only works on Thule cross rails. I returned it and got the universal Inno Racks fairing instead.
JBREINING asks - Will the Thule fairing adapt to a 2008 Jeep Compass factory cross bar?
ORS Crew answers - No. Thule rack fairings are only compatible with the Thule Racks square load bars and elliptical Thule Rapid Aero load bars. For factory rack cross bars you'll want to go with an Inno Racks Fairing, which work great on factory racks.
