The innovative Thule 887XT SlipStream kayak rack is designed and developed by Thule Racks specifically for those users looking for excellent kayak loading assistance and are also concerned about their kayak making contact with the rear of their car when loading the kayak onto the kayak roof rack.
PLEASE NOTE: The Thule Racks 887XT SlipStream replaces the discontinued Thule 887 SlipStream model with redesigned features that include:
- Longer rear kayak roller extension for SUV's and other large vehicles with rear roof mount spoilers or cars with roof racks that are forward-mounted on the rooftop.
- Increased frame tubing wall thickness that better resists kayak bow impacts and heavy kayak loads.
- New improved front kayak saddles that offer universal compatibility including fishing kayaks.
- Simpler 2 slide quick-release instead of 4 and can be positioned on either side of 887XT SlipStream for ultimate ease of use.
- Extra 1" frame extension forward of front load bar improves front saddle adjustability.
The Thule 887XT Slipstream kayak rack is a complete all-in-one kayak rack with load-assist roller extension. Includes front and rear premium kayak saddles that automatically pivot to perfectly conform to any kayak hull size or shape. Users are guaranteed that kayak to vehicle contact is eliminated while loading and unloading the boat due to the 887XT Slip Stream kayak carrier's unique adjustable sliding base bars and rear roller position, yes it includes a rear roller for the easiest loading of any kayak - one person can do it with virtually no effort!
The included adjustable front and rear kayak saddles allow positioning of kayak at bulkheads (the strongest part of the kayak) regardless of base roof rack system location. Compatible with all styles of kayaks, even fishing kayaks. Thule 887XT SlipStream kayak rack mounts directly to both Thule square load bars & elliptical Rapid Aero bars, Thule Xsporter Truck Rack, Inno RoofRack crossbars, Yakima round cross bars and virtually all factory installed roof racks with cross bars. Includes all mounting hardware, two heavy-duty straps, buckle bumpers and a pair of Thule 855 QuickDraw ratcheting tie-down straps for securing kayak bow and stern to vehicle.

Makes Loading Easy!!

We started with the Thule J-Racks for our yaks which are fine for short trips. Since we are venturing wider and wider we wanted something to cut down on the "sail" feature of the J-Racks. The Slipstream is the perfect fit. Much easier to load and unload the yaks. The slide back feature helps keep the rear windshield fairing protected and the roller makes loading almost too easy. Stability is magnitudes better than the J-Racks. Highly recommended to anyone with a long kayak.

When I purchased my Kayak I had also purchased the Thule 835 rack system. The 835 is a good rack, but due to the height and size of my vehicle I needed another person to help me load my kayak. When I saw the Thule 887XT SlipStream rack on your web site, I knew I could load my kayak onto my Sequoia by myself. The 887XT is easy to assemble and mount to the vehicle. I used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was so easy loading and unloading my kayak. Anyone who has a "high profile" vehicle will love this rack. It was a very good purchase!

I used to transport this kayak on a Saab 9000 with Hull-a-port carriers. Usually we were worried about damaging the boat/ the side-view mirrors/ our backs. After getting the Honda CRV we were concerned about the roof height. How in the world would we comfortably, safely get this behemoth boat on top? The Slipstream XT makes it so easy to load. Since the entire rack slides back to beyond the rear of the roof, I can lean the boat on the roller, and just push it up without backstrain! I am very impressed with the ease of use. It is also a less-obtrusive method (and less expensive by FAR!) than buying the Hullivator from Thule.

ORS Racks Direct crew says - This carrier works on oversize, large-diameter factory rack crossbars such as the Nissan XTerra, as well as the Thule-DeWalt 375 / 376 PRO truck racks, however you will also need to use the Thule Xadapt 3 Kit (includes 80mm long bolts) to properly mount it to the Nissan XTerra factory rack bars.
Jeff asks - Will the Slip Stream handle two kayaks?
ORS Crew answers - The 887XT SlipStream is designed to carry one kayak only. Although you can certainly mount two sets of these kayak carriers next to each other on roof rack crossbars to transport 2 kayaks.
Terry asks - Will the 887XT Slip Stream work on my 2011 Jeep Liberty OEM roof rack cross bars? They are oval and have a roughly 3" x 1" profile.
ORS Crew answers - Yes, it is a great choice for a kayak rack on your 11 Jeep Liberty OEM installed cross bars. Mounts directly, no extra adapters needed.
SHERWOOD asks - Does anyone know if I can place two 887XT's next to each other for carrying 2 kayaks on a Subaru Forester with the factory cross bars?
ORS Crew answers - Unfortunately you will not have enough room on the Subaru Forester factory bars for connecting two 887XT SlipSteam kayak carriers side by side. You could connect one 887XT to the factory bars and then connect a j-cradle style carrier next to it. Another option is to mount two sets of Malone SeaWing-Stinger kayak racks next to each other. This is the only option for carrying two kayaks flat and side by side on the factory bars. This is accomplished via the V-wing orientation of the clamps that allow the saddles to connect much closer to the edges of the factory bars so there is enough room for both kayaks. The Malone SeaWing-Stinger kayak rack also offers a superb rear lift assist mechanism, similar to what the SlipStream offers in kayak loading assistance.
J. Morin asks - I have a 887XT and don't feel the factory cross bars on my 2000 Dodge Caravan are strong enough. I also want to add another 887XT for a 2nd kayak. The factory crossbars definitely are not wide enough for two of these. Is there a Thule base rack I could replace my factory rack with?
ORS Crew answers - For your 2000 Dodge Caravan we highly recommend the Thule 430 Tracker II roof rack system (choose the TK1 Tracker Kit and the 58 inch cross bars). It connects directly to the 2000 Dodge Caravan factory tracks, replacing the current weak factory cross bars. Quickly attaches to the factory tracks using the included TK1 Tracker Kits. The 58” load bars will provide enough room for two 887XT SlipStream kayak racks next to each other.
Walter asks - Can I fit two 887XT SlipStream kayak racks on my Subaru 2011 Outback with factory rail and crossbars?
ORS Crew answers - No you won't have enough room on the factory cross bars. You would instead need to install the Thule 450 Crossroad base rack system (with at least the 58" length cross bars selected) to the Outback side rails. This will provide enough crossbar space for two 887XT carriers side by side. Alternatively, you could mount two sets of j-cradle kayak racks to the factory crossbars. The j-cradle kayak carriers transport the kayaks cradled on their sides, thus taking up less cross bar space.
Steve Besley asks - Will there be room on a 2002 Chevy Astro Van with the factory cross bars to mount two SlipStream racks side-by-side? And if not, is there an accessory Thule cross bar set to purchase?
ORS Crew answers - You will not have enough room on the factory bars for two carriers side by side. All you need to do is mount the Thule 45058 Crossroad roof rack system to your 2002 Chevy Astro Van factory side rails however. You will then have the ideal length cross bars, and bars that are strong enough to safely support the weight of kayaks etc.
