PLEASE NOTE: The only difference between the 917XTR T2 model and the 917XT T2 model is that Thule Racks upgraded the 917XTR with a cable lock on the end of each SecureHook that pulls out and wraps around the bike for total security. The 917XT version only has a lock on the SecureHook clamp arm. There was much discussion about how you could deflate the tire and get the bike wheel out from the clamp arm even when locked, enabling someone to possibly steal the bike. The new cable lock on the 917XTR T2 version resolves this issue. You could use a regular bike cable lock on the 917XT T2 to pretty much accomplish the same level of security.

Very Secure Rack

I really like the T2 rack because it keeps my carbon fiber road bike and mountain bike from swinging back and forth, which used to happen on the hitch bike rack I used previously, the kind where you hang the bikes on the rack. Really like how the bike rack folds up when I don't need it, and the folded down position allows me to still open the rear hatch door without any problems. Very happy.

I LOVE the Thule T2 917XT rack! Super easy to assemble and use. The only problem I have is that I am not able to open the back door of my 2002 Toyota Rav4 with the rack on as the door has side hinges rather than top hinges. Even with the capability to drop the rack with bikes loaded...the back door can't open. The benefits far outwiegh this inconvenience though.

ORS Crew explains - This hitch bike rack will likely work on vehicles with a rear mount spare tire, however it probably will not be able to be used in the stored and folded up position. This Thule Hitch Bike Racks Diagrams & Dimensions Chart is a good reference. For platform rack models you are interested in the 'C' measurement, the distance between the hitch pin hole and the inside edge of the folded up bike tray. In general, platform racks will have issues in folded up position on cars with spare tires. The upright, hanging-style hitch bike racks are a better option. You can see the distance beween the hitch pin hole and the mast (measurement 'A') is much longer to clear spare tires. Also a spare tire mount bike rack is a very good alternative to consider.
