Excellent Truck Canoe Rack!
this Thule 997 Goal Post review by Drew
vehicle year/make/model: 2003 Nissan Frontier
item(s) transported: canoe
I recently bought a 15' canoe and quickly realized that my short bed, midsized Nissan Frontier was going to need some extra support when transporting my canoe. I came across this GoalPost T-Bar Hitch Rack and knew that this would be perfect for that extra support. Turns out, it was! Now I take my canoe on short trips to the lake and a few long trips to the coast to fish the bays and flats. This rack is perfect for adding support when transporting any long outdoor equipment or lumber. It was easy to put together, has the capability to adjust the height, and doesn't take up hardly any space when storing it. I definitely recommend this truck accessory to anyone who is transporting anything that they don’t plan on losing while driving. Great purchase!
Solid and Adaptable

Solid and adaptable. It does not wobble when the straps are tightened.
Works Good but I Can't Lower My TailGate
this Thule 997 Goal Post review by Skipper
vehicle year/make/model: 2009 Ford F150 pickup truck
item(s) transported: canoe
A bolt holds the mount in your receiver. I'd rather just use the pin you use to hold a the ball mount in the receiver but your stuck looking for a wrench. The bolt makes for a tighter fit than a pin, but you lose a lot of convenience. Also remember you can't drop your tailgate to help unload/load your stuff. Where did I put that wrench? Hmmm, didn't think about that. The securing straps are 100% necessary as without them the mount will sway enough to make you want to use them. Otherwise, very well made, looks good, works as designed. This is a good solution if you don't have access to your bed sleeves or are using them for something else.

Adam B. asks - I'm wondering exactly how much vertical adjustability there is. How many inches can it be raised and lowered and are their increments?
ORS Crew answers - The 997 Goal Post extends from 42" to 70" at 2" increments.
John Champion asks - Is the Thule 997 Goalpost rated for mounting on a front mounted receiver?
DakotaCV answers - Yep. I use the GoalPost on my front hitch receiver. Works great.
Dave asks - Can this be used with a hitch extension to clear a rear mounted spare tire?
ORS Crew answers - Yes, however this will diminish the overall load carrying capacity. You will want to load your equipment and test for any unwanted movement of the hitch rack.
John L. asks - Is it legal to mount the Goal Post to a front mounted (under the front bumper) 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. I am concerned some states may object because of possible driver sight obstruction?
ORS Crew answers - Yes it is legal. We've had many customers purchase the GoalPost to use on a front bumper. Here are a couple example customer install pictures of front mounted systems (these feature the Yakima DryDock, works just like the Thule 997 GoalPost)...
2002 Chevy Silverado 2500hd kayak rack with 5th wheel
2008 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck kayak racks
Andrew-NC asks - Can you load two canoes on the Goal Post rack?
ORS Crew answers - Most likely not, but depends on the width of your canoes. The crossbar is 58 inches long, not providing enough space for most types of canoes to sit side by side to each other. You do not have the option of choosing a longer cross bar with the 997. The bar is pre-drilled for mounting to the bracket on the end of the upright mast. The Yakima DryDock is an excellent alternative. Works exactly the same as the 997 GoalPost and allows you to choose a longer length crossbar (the 66 inch or 78 inch length bar would be ideal for two canoes).
Dave Bell asks - I have a 1992 Toyota truck SR5 extra cab, and I want to carry a 17ft kayak. I want to buy the Thule 997 Goal Post for the rear and I need a single cross bar on the truck cab no gutters on this truck. What cab roof rack components do I need?
ORS Crew answers - You will want to go with the Thule 400XT Aero Half Pack roof rack system for the '92 Toyota SR5 pickup truck cab roof. Includes two Thule 400XT Feet, Fit Kit clips (select the 61 Fit Kit for your vehicle) and a single load bar (the 50" load bar works for your truck but you may want to choose the longer 58" length to match the 58 inch cross bar on the Thule 997 Goal Post hitch rack.
Product Videos
Thule 997 GoalPost hitch mast T-bar rack review video & demo by ORS Racks Direct. Demonstration movie of the Thule Racks 997 Goal Post hitch rack, a superb 2 inch trailer hitch mount T-bar style carrier for transporting canoes, extra-long kayaks, ladders, lumber and other construction materials etc. The Thule 997 GoalPost is most often used in combination with a single cross bar roof rack located on the front of the vehicle. Video features the Thule 480 Traverse Half Pack system mounted to a pickup truck cab roof. Thule 997 Goal Post offers vertical adjustability and includes a 58 inch Thule square load bar. Optionally attach any gear carriers to the 997 GoalPost cross bar and the cross bar used on the front of the vehicle for easy loading and safe, secure transport of gear and equipment. For security we recommend the Thule STL2 Snug-Tite Lock to lock the GoalPost T-mast to the trailer hitch.
