Excellent Rack

I have always loved Yakima products and this is no exception. This mount works well and is very solid. The ability to flip the rack down (when the bikes aren't loaded) is really handy for loading up the vehicle while keeping the rack attached...something you will want to do if using regularly as there is a threaded bolt to increase rack stability. The integrated lock works really well and horizontal adjustments were easy. One pleasant surprise I had was that the rear window on our Honda Pilot was still easily able to clear the rack when still loaded & upright! One downfall - I was unable to load four bikes on it because two of them were small (one kids) women's mountain bikes that required top tube adapters. Because of the short length of the frame, the handles from bike 3 wouldn't clear the seat of bike 4, so I ended up putting it on top of the vehicle. I expect this would have been true of any comparable rack though.

I agree with the last review - this is a smarter design than the fold-back racks. The mechanism, and the rack itself, is heavy duty and I expect it to last for many years. Loading bikes with confidence is worth a lot in peace of mind. To the RAV4 owner with clearance issues - there are adapters out there that will effectively drop your hitch a few inches. Google "receiver hitch drop" for more info.

The Yakima Flipside is a good rack. We have had no problems thus far. It is extremely rugged and durable. We use it often and has proven to be very reliable. The “flipside” feature is very nice, much better that the drop down feature of other racks, which when down, can get in the way when you’re trying to access the hatch. Because this one swings over to one side, it is out of the way. Smart thinking for sure on Yakima’s part. The support arms also can fold down which is nice for when you’re not using the rack. The other thing I’ll point out, which is another plus, is the fact that it can work with both 2" and 1-1/4" receiver hitches. It uses a sleeve to convert from one configuration to the other which is a simple idea but one that not all hitch racks use.

We just took this out of the box yesterday, put it together in 10 minutes and inserted it in the hitch. I wanted to make sure it cleared the spare tire. There was more than enough room (about 6 inches extra space) but to my disappointment, when we flipped the mast to the side the door did not clear the post. The main reason I bought this hitch was because the mast folded to the side when not in use so now we have a relatively useless feature. So if you have a 2006 Toyota Rav4 or newer model you might not want to spend the extra money on this rack. Otherwise it is very solidly built.
