The 04039 Yakima HullRaiser kayak racks will do it all and save you some money if you plan to attach it to Yakima base roof rack cross bars or Thule square load bars. Does not attach directly to factory rack crossbars, we instead recommend the Yakima Hull Raiser Aero kayak rack for this application. Alternatively you can use a set of Yakima Mighty Mounts (sold separately; see accessories below) if you ever plan to connect the regular Hull Raiser to a factory installed car rack system.

Carrier uses a specially engineered J-cradle design that accepts any kayak and supports it from the stiff, side area. And unlike kayak racks that transport the boat flat, the HullRaiser conveniently frees up cross bar space for another one or attaching other gear carriers. Two heavy-duty straps and a pair of bow & stern tie-down straps all included.

I have my yakima HullRiaser attached to a Q Tower base rack on my Toyota Matrix. I'm getting ready for a trip and taking my buddy's Volvo v70 XC which has a factory rack with crossbars but no Yakima rack round bars. Can I somehow attach my current HullRaiser to the Volvo v70 roof rack crossbars or do I have to buy the new Aero version? reply posted by: mc sparks No need to scrap your HullRaiser and pay out to get the new HullRaiser Aero. Just get a set of the Yakima Universal MightyMount adapters. These clamp onto just about any factory rack crossbars, including Volvo V70 XC roof rack bars. You can then connect your HullRaiser right to the MightyMounts. The cool thing is the universal mighty mounts will work on virtually any crossbar configuration. Before Yakima Racks came out with the Universal MightyMounts, they only had the horizontal Mighty Mounts. There are dozens of these so that they can fit specific vehicle year/make/model factory rack configurations. Yakima still offers the horizontal MM as an alternative to the Universal Mighty mounts. Usually you use the Yakima online fit guide to find out what Horizontal MM number fits your car. I'm not sure what year your friend's Volvo v70 XC is but I don't think Yakima even has one made for it so you'd have to go with the Universal MM anyway. Yakima offers the 4038 HullRaiser Aero model with this feature so it earns the 'premium' categorization. Perhaps the 'mid-level' label on the 4039 Hullraiser is a misnomer because it really does perform just as flawlessly. Attaching to Yakima round bars or Thule square load bars couldn't be simpler. The included snap-around clamps and bolts fasten down quickly using the included hex key. We opted to include a Yakima 7220 Accessory Lock Housing on one of the bolt/snap-around configurations on each cradle (one on the base rack cross bar and one on the rear cross bar) and inserted a Yakima SKS lock in each lock housing so that each HullRaiser j-cradle would lock to the crossbars for maximum theft protection. Ample padding on each cradle made sure whatever style kayak we loaded up was protected and snug and tight in the cradles. We thought to try out attaching a cargo box in the center of 58" crossbars and then see if two Hullraisers would fit (one on either side of the roof box). Yep it all fit.
