question posted by: voxpop2 I'm using the Yakima Mako Saddle-Hully Roller combination on the Q Towers base rack system on my 2006 Toyota Corolla. I'm locking the kayak to the kayak rack using the SteelCore straps, which are awesome for locking the kayak. I just noticed that I'm still leaving myself vulnerable because someone could just unscrew the bolts on the Makos and HollyRollers and just make off with the kayak AND the kayak rack! Has anyone rigged up any way to lock the kayak rack to the crossbars. Thieves would then have a very tough time because my Q Towers are already locked to the rooftop. reply posted by: rack_boy You won't have to worry about rigging up any sorta contraption to lock the kayak rack to your crossbars. Yakima racks already makes special lock housing that you can use specifically for this purpose. You attach one lock housing to the bottom of one of the bolts on each Mako kayak saddle or HullyRoller (in fact lock housing works with all Yakima gear carriers; however it won't work with Yakima Universal MightyMounts, Vertical Mighty Mounts or Yakima ski carriers). You then insert a Yakima SKS lock core into the lock housing unit and after locking with key the kayak carrier is locked to the crossbars. So for your Mako Saddle-Hully Roller combination four 7220 Accessory Yakima Lock Housing units and a four pack of locks will do the trick. You can also talk to a dealer and get the same SKS lock# as the 4 locks on your Q Towers that are locked to your Toyota Corolla rooftop. This way all eight locks will lock/unlock using the same key. As I said earlier, the Lock Housing is not compatible with Yakima ski racks or the Vertical & Universal Mighty Mounts, but they will work with the Horizontal MightyMounts and any Yakima kayak racks & bike racks. posting permission granted by car racks resources public forum » All Yakima HullyRollers Kayak Rack Forum Threadsyakima hullyroller review posted by: car_rack_resources This is the kayak carrier set up that took kayak rack technology to the next level of effortless loading and unloading a kayak on car roofs. We found the HullyRollers to be a superb assistant for any type of kayak except for maybe a whitewater kayak which is generally light enough to just hoist directly onto the kayak rack. For any other kayak style, the sliding onto the rollers makes it a cinch. You only need to lift the front part of the boat onto the rollers, the rollers pivot backwards to meet the kayak tip also. Then the HullyRoller performs flawlessly to push forward and guide the hull onto the front kayak saddles. The combination of a pair of HullyRollers on the back car rack crossbar and a pair of Yakima Mako Saddles on the front bar makes perhaps the best kayak rack system available. The roller brake pull-tab that allows the rollers to either spin (when loading or unloading the kayak) or brake for no movement (when in transit) works well except that you need to slightly rock the kayak forward and backward on the rollers to get the tab in the locked position when the kayak is resting on the rollers. But after a couple of times loading the boat you'll get this nuance down without even thinking twice about it.
