Excellent
this Yakima Spare Time bike rack review by Walt S.

This is the best engineered spare tire mount bike rack system I have seen and I love mine. I just wish I wouldn't have waited so long to get it.
Great Design / Practice
this Yakima SpareTime bike rack review by nicesurlynicegoodboy
vehicle year/make/model: 2006 Honda CRV
item(s) transported: A Surly Cross Check and soon to be built Travelers Check single-speed
My preference has always been for the roof rack, but having changed cars recently to one with a spare tire mount, the Spare Time made a great option. For starters, it's easy to mount and ready to roll right out of the box. I estimate that it took 20 minutes to fully install. I enjoy the fact I can slap my bike on there in a moments notice and head out, not having to take off the front tire made this a bonus. Appearance wise, the device is quite attractive. Have to remember that function must always follow aesthetic form and the Spare Time bike rack delivers on both fronts. It is not gaudy and has a neat well-balanced appearance when in transit or being stowed. The color scheme is equally attractive and is one that scream durability. Things to consider if you were wanting to purchase, the felt cushion on which you place the bike is a little crumby. It will move in excessive heat as it is only secured by an adhesive glue. The glue x heat x times bike sways often makes them move out of place. Yakima was kind enough to send me a new pair for free. The other thing to be wary of is the really cool Yakima logo may begin to peek in conditions of excessive heat. Handlers beware if you are particular about appearances. No fear if you could care less. One other point to mention is that kids bikes will not fit comfortably with an adult bike in tow. Lots of playing around to get my son's bike on in sync with my own. Two road bikes--no problem. Overall, satisfied with the purchase in spite of the caveats described above. This rack has single handedly improved me and my bikes well being, since I bring my Surly everywhere, saving the earth one bike at a time.
Mounting Bracket Doesn't Fit
this Yakima SpareTime bike rack review by Brian from Long Island
vehicle year/make/model: 2009 Toyota RAV4
item(s) transported: bikes
I love the design of the Spare Time, but if I can't mount it, what good is it? Although Yakima Racks lists the 2009 Toyota Rav4 as a fit, when I got the rack, the mounting plate doesn't fit. It seems there might be a 'known' problem with the 09 Rav4 fit. I don't understand why Yakima would list it as a fit if there is a known problem. The fit is off by about 1/4", so now it looks like I'll have to break out my Dremel and make some modifications either to the bracket, the tire support bracket on my Rav4, or both.
ORS Racks Direct says - We too have just discovered this issue! It isn't consistent with all 09 Rav4's (also some 2010 Toyota Rav4 models), but there may be a half-circle shaped flange that supports the weight of the tire on your Rav4… if so, the SpareTime plate won’t quite sit properly flush. If you don’t have the flange, the plate will sit flush and allow everything to bolt up correctly. If you do have the flange you can make it work by modifying / cutting off the flange that supports the spare tire to allow a flush mount of the SpareTime mounting plate (the SpareTime mounting plate will fully support the tire). We recommend first determining if you have this half-circle shaped support flange. If so, either be prepared to make modifications or go with the Thule 963XTR Spare Me instead (which is fully compatible with this flange).
Update from Brian of Long Island - OK I wanted to follow up on my previous review, I called Yakima and while I was waiting for them to call me back, I used my Dremel to modify the mounting plate. It took less than ten minutes and works fine. All I had to do was grind two semi-circles about 1/4" in diameter so that the tire support wouldn't keep the mounting plate from going into position properly. The key was having the Dremel, otherwise it would have been a bear to hand grind it down. When Yakima called me back they told me that they had fixed the problem and would send me a new mounting plate right away. All mounting plates now shipping with the SpareTime will work on the RAV4 without any modifications needed.

ORS Crew says - The SpareTime fits tire widths P195 to P318 (12.5") / this means any tire width as narrow as 7.6" on up to as wide as 12.5" inches should be okay. It will not fit 8-hole bolt patterns or hole patterns greater than 5.5" in diameter.
JAR asks - Will this model fit the 2009 Toyota RAV4?
ORS Crew answers - Yes. If the spare wheel has the cover on it, that will have to be removed though, as this bike rack mounts directly to the lugs on the hub. Another good option is the Yakima Spare Joe model, which will install without having to remove the spare tire cover.
IMPORTANT UPDATE INFO: We have just discovered an issue with some 2009 Rav4 and 2010 Rav4 models! It isn't consistent with all 2009 Toyota Rav4 (also some 2010 Toyota Rav4 models), but there may be a half-circle shaped flange that supports the weight of the tire on your Rav4… if so, the SpareTime plate won’t quite sit properly flush.
FURTHER UPDATE REGARDING RAV4 ISSUE - As of 5/26/2011 Yakima has fixed this issue and the Spare Time is now shipping with a reconfigured mounting plate that works on all RAV4 models without any modifications required.
Matthew asks - Will this work as a 2010 Jeep Wrangler spare tire mount bike rack?
ORS Crew answers - Yes, you are good to go with mounting this carrier on the Jeep Wrangler spare tire.
