An economical alternative to more permanent car rooftop kayak racks, the Yakima Universal Kayak Carrier Foam Blocks (8004053) also include a pair of heavy-duty straps and a pair of bow & stern tie-down straps for a complete kayak transport solution. The Yakima Universal Kayak Carrier Foam Blocks mount directly to all styles of aftermarket car rack crossbars (including Yakima, Thule, Inno crossbars etc.) and virtually all factory roof racks. Additionally, the kayak blocks can be used directly on vehicles with naked rooftops that have no rack system crossbars. While not as convenient as more permanent kayak carrier models, the foam blocks are a solid solution if transporting a kayak short distances or intending to carry a kayak infrequently. Simply place the foam blocks onto your car's crossbars (or place directly on car roof top if your vehicle has no crossbars), load boat onto the blocks and then strap down the boat firmly in place using the 2 included heavy-duty straps. Also secure the kayak to the front and rear of the vehicle using the included bow & stern straps.

Needs Some Instructions

I bought the foam blocks carrier to transport a kayak home from a store I bought the kayak at. I had a very difficult time figuring out the numerous tie down straps. There were no instructions except for a picture on the carrying bag which were pretty much useless. Having never transported a kayak before and not ever having used a carrier such as these foam pads, I was terribly frustrated. I still do not know which straps go where! And when I got home the kayak's shape was distorted because of the way I strapped it down...took about an hour to get it back to its original shape. I am sure a simple set of instructions describing what each type of strap was designed for would have made everything go smoothly. It was 95 degrees out and I was alone which made the experience even worse. I would only recommend buying this if one has experience in transport tie downs or Yakama includes some simple instructions.

ORDERING NOTES
If loading kayak from the rear of the vehicle we highly recommend the Thule 854 Water Slide Mat (not included; see accessory add-ons above) for simultaneously protecting your vehicle and also gaining extra assistance when loading and unloading a boat.
This carrier mounts directly to virtually all factory racks, Yakima base rack cross bars, all styles of Thule Racks load bars, Inno Car Rack crossbars etc.
Also works on vehicles with no rooftop rack. For this configuration, simply place foam blocks on the car roof top and then run the straps through the car interior by opening up the car doors and looping the straps through the inside. When tightened, the straps will be snug against the car interior ceiling and you can open and close the doors without interference.
Pair of universal Yakima Kayak Foam Blocks, two heavy-duty straps and pair of bow & stern tie-down straps with hooks included. Everything needed for hauling one boat. Handy storage bag also included.
